BREATH ANALYSIS

Metabolic Testing & Breath Analysis measures gas exchange (carbon dioxide and oxygen) at rest and various levels of exercise to get an in depth science-based view of metabolism, respiratory function, and cardiovascular performance.  An in-depth understanding of your body’s function in these areas has many benefits such as a functional health assessment, risk stratification, performance limiters, fitness / performance training optimization, and more.  If you think of seeing a physician for bloodwork, calcium score testing, ECG, etc. as the gold standard of Clinical Health, then metabolic testing / breath analysis is the gold standard of Functional Health.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM THIS SERVICE?

Competitive Athletes

Detail oriented training to optimize performance cannot be left to guesswork.  Exercise testing is critical to determine the starting point of prescription - addressing the clients’ first limitation(s).  For example, respiratory limitations will not be resolved via cardiovascular specific protocols and vice versa.  With a thorough mapping of your metabolic function, respiratory function, and exercise capacity, we can map out your individual specific needs in addition to your sport specific demands.

As a result of a RampTest protocol, athletes receive training zones (zone 1-5) allowing us to deliver laser focused intensity prescriptions vs. vague recommendations for your training plan.  Accurate targets return accurate adaptations.  Receive the information to target your needs based upon heart rate, pace, and/or watt zones.  Syncing wearable technology in training to our testing results gives you the ability to maximize your return on exercise investment.

Health Oriented Individuals

Metabolic testing provides advanced health metrics to assess your current status and provides direction to your fitness and health journey forward.  Risk associated with many preventable diseases can be determined by functional fitness markers such as VO2 Max (maximal oxygen consumption), RER (Respiratory Exchange Ratio), RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate) and more.  Markers of metabolic function such as your fuel switching from fat to carbs or your fuel source at rest can highlight risk for metabolic diseases such as metabolic syndrome, diabetes, heart disease, etc.  Resting metabolic rate testing provides data showing how many calories you burn per minute at rest and what you burn for your source of energy.  This data can be used to devise training and nutrition strategies to improve metabolic rate and function for fat loss, muscle gain, and improved efficiency for exercise.  As mentioned above, custom exercise zoning provides accuracy for workout types.  For example, metabolic health target heart rate vs. VO2 max stimulating heart rate are vastly different targets.  Without your data driven targets, do you know what you are getting from your exercise program?

IS THERE VALUE IN RE-TESTING?

Optimizing your exercise progress requires adjusting your prescription (intensity, duration, frequency) and sometimes changing directions.  The more accurate assessments you have, the more detail oriented training plan you receive.  Physiology can adapt relatively quickly to a new stimulus.  If you stick with the same plan, you will slow your progress and miss out on the next limitation to address.  For example, if you are targeting better fat utilization as fuel in low intensity exercise for 8 weeks, your next test can show progress here from exercise and nutrition strategy.  Your plan should adjust to target cardiovascular endurance, VO2 max improvement (aerobic capacity) or another sport specific variable.  If you do not participate in follow up testing, you will not adjust your plan at the appropriate time.  Your training zones can also change with your adaptation to your program.  These need to be updated to stay on target with the stimulus you are trying to provide.  For optimal results, we recommend testing 8 weeks between test 1 and 2, and 12 weeks between test 2 and 3.
