Mat Pilates w/ Kim Shemer Kurtzman

Free Pilates Class with Kim Shemer Kurtzman, Doctor of Physical Therapy and Certified Pilates instructor.  Pilates has been shown to strengthen the "core," which can alleviate pain in the neck, upper and lower back, and hips.  It tones the abs, chest, back and hips, and improves posture, flexibility and balance.  It is wonderful for cross training with other forms of exercise, significantly improving performance.  This is an open-level class, appropriate for complete beginners, and will also challenge those who are already experienced.  And it's fun, so try it out!

Biofeedback Demonstration w/ Tim Herzog

Biofeedback is a tool used to observe the physiological changes associated with stress, thereby allowing one greater influence over one's stress response.  Dr. Tim Herzog will demonstrate a modality of biofeedback, called "Heart Rate Variability," and will allow people to see how breathing and certain kinds of thinking can be trained to reduce stress (perhaps improving performance in the process).

Cold Laser Treatment w/ Haile Physical Therapy

Cold Laser  or LLLT  (Low Level Laser Therapy) is a pain relieving modality that has been used by trained professionals in the medical field for over 30 years to aid in the treatment of a variety of orthopedic and neurological conditions.  This type of treatment uses light from the near infrared spectrum to assist in the relief of pain associated with sports injuries, muscle spasms, and joint pain by improving tissue healing and decreasing pain and inflammation. 

The MicroLight 830 nm cold laser is FDA approved and there are no side effects or harm caused to human tissue.  Over 400 randomized clinical studies regarding the efficacy of cold laser have concluded the benefits of cold laser for treating pain and inflammation. The American Physical Therapy Association, British Medical Journal, The Lancet, World Health Organization, and the American College of Physicians have published articles regarding the benefits of LLLT for neck, low back pain, achilles tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and more! 

Typically, LLLT is used as an adjunct to one's overall treatment.  Results can be seen in as little as one treatment, depending on the nature and longevity of the injury/condition.  The average treatment time range is 10-15 minutes depending on the area being treated.

Yoga: Modifying Sun Salutation Postures to Protect Your Spine w/ Ruthie O'Hehir

Sun Salutations are a common sequence involving some of the most foundational yoga postures (including forward and backward bends).  Whether an avid yogi or new to the practice of yoga, learning key alignment principles and modifications can significantly reduce your risk of injury, especially in the spine, when executing these postures.  We'll review common pitfalls of each posture and practice the sequence with proper alignment, using modifications, as needed for each individual:

  • Tadasana (Mountain Pose)
  • Urdhva Hastasana (Upward Salute)
  • Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend)
  • Ardha Uttanasana (Half Standing Forward Bend)

This class is designed for adults who like a high tempo, fast paced workout.  It's also perfect for anyone trying to lose weight!  With circuit training and cardio intervals, get a full body workout every time.  Exercises can be modified, as needed, based on each participant.
